West Cork Stone Symposium 2017

Victor Daly sculptor

The West Cork Stone Symposium celebrates stone as part of our environment and as a source of inspiration throughout the ages

The event will be held in Ahakista on West Cork’s Sheep’s Head peninsula from 24-26 March 2017, as Victor Daly welcomes the best stone carvers and dry stone wallers from across Europe to this rugged part of southwest Ireland’s coastline, on the Wild Atlantic Way touring route.

Come to the symposium to be inspired by a rugged coastline that’s home to Ireland’s most creative communities. Discover how stone has shaped our lives and imaginations, and unleash your own creativity as you learn from stone masons, carvers, and sculptors whose work carries ancient traditions into the future.

For generations, artists, makers, producers, and dreamers have been inspired by the stone that forms our peninsulas, islands, rolling hills, and valleys. Stone tells a story that unlocks the flavours, textures, landscapes, and creativity of our Wild Atlantic shoreline.

Stillness in Stone: A West Cork Heron

Heron Carving Victor Daly

Herons are a familiar sight here in West Cork. Sometimes they make a sudden huge impression on you as they swoop past in their prehistoric style; at other times, their forms seem to emerge from the landscape as you look at it. The stillness of a heron standing in shallow water, or pausing in a garden, has an amazing quality to it.

In this project, stone became the medium for representing that captivating stillness.

Stone garden ornaments give a timeless quality to the well-planted garden. They always help to guide the eye and dramatise space, but when they represent local wildlife, they add another dimension, reminding us that we share our outdoor spaces with the birds and creatures around us.

We can only imagine what the local herons will make of their new neighbour when they come across him.
