Stone Conservation and Restoration

Barryscourt Castle Stone Restoration Cork

Victor is highly experienced in historic building conservation

He has put his stone conservation and restoration skills to use on a range of high-profile projects for Historic Scotland, Ireland’s Office of Public Works, as well as for private clients.

He is committed to using traditional skills and tools to ensure that the finished work is authentic and chimes perfectly with the stonework that was put in place when each building was first constructed.

Restoring Historic Buildings

On behalf of Historic Scotland, Victor carried out extensive stone repair and conservation work at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh. Here in Ireland, he spent three years engaged in conservation, repair and restoration work at Barryscourt Castle in East Cork.

Traditional Stone-Carving Skills

Victor undertake the sensitive work which ensures that these buildings remain in fine condition, and fit for purpose, in the twenty-first century. In doing so he draws on skills that have been passed down from generation to generation.

His own training started when he became the first person from ‘outside the family’ to be apprenticed to a Cork family who had passed on their stone-cutting skills from generation to generation.

Working on stone conservation projects over the last twenty years, Victor has honed those skills, and supplemented them with techniques and ideas from the wider stone-cutting and conservation communities.
